It's official. Apple has announced its first ever foldable iPhone — and it's called the iPhone Duo. Unveiled at the "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, 2026, the iPhone Duo is the most significant iPhone launch since the original device in 2007. Apple CEO John Ternus — who officially replaced Tim Cook on September 1 — introduced it as a device that will "redefine what an iPhone can do, while still feeling natural and familiar."

Design — Thinnest iPhone Ever When Unfolded
The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer cover screen and a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display — larger than an iPad mini when fully open. The frame is made from titanium reinforced with ceramic fibres, and Apple claims the inner display is more scratch-resistant than any other foldable on the market. When unfolded it is the thinnest iPhone ever made, measuring between 4.5 and 4.8mm.
The device uses a multi-layer lamination design that Apple says eliminates the visible crease that has plagued Samsung's Z Fold lineup. We'll wait for independent reviews to confirm that claim — but if true, it solves foldables' biggest longstanding complaint.
Available in two colours: Star White and Night Sky (dark blue). The camera sits in an iPhone Air-style plateau on the rear.
Display & Software
Both the inner and outer displays use a 1.4 aspect ratio, and the FaceTime camera is hidden behind the inner display. iOS 27 has been optimised specifically for the Duo — you can move apps between screens, split the screen, duplicate views, pair apps together, and use the device in any orientation including partially folded (tent mode). Apple says all first-party apps have been rebuilt for the larger canvas.
Performance — A20 Pro & C2 Modem
The iPhone Duo is powered by the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro — built on 2nm technology with a 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU. It also features Apple's second-generation in-house C2 modem with mmWave 5G. The device is eSIM-only in every region.
Camera
The rear camera system features a 48MP Fusion main camera and a 48MP ultrawide — notably no telephoto, a trade-off made to keep the device as slim as possible. Apple Pencil support is coming later in 2026 for both displays.
Face ID — Replaced by Touch ID
One notable omission: the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the power button rather than Face ID. The complexity of integrating TrueDepth into a foldable hinge made this necessary. For most users this will be a non-issue, but longtime Face ID users will need an adjustment period.
Battery
The Duo houses a 4,883mAh battery and delivers approximately 24 hours of mixed-screen use. Using only the outer screen significantly extends that number. No MagSafe support.

Should You Buy It?
The iPhone Duo is genuinely exciting — Apple has solved the crease problem, made it thinner than any foldable before it, and backed it with the most powerful mobile chip available. The trade-offs are real though: no Face ID, no telephoto camera, no MagSafe, and a price that starts well above $2,000 CAD.
If you're a power user who genuinely needs a large inner display for multitasking, reading, or creative work, the Duo is compelling. If you're upgrading from a regular iPhone and don't have a specific use case for the big screen, an iPhone 18 Pro makes more financial sense.
