iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max — Variable Aperture, 45-Hour Battery, Everything You Need to Know

iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max — Variable Aperture, 45-Hour Battery, Everything You Need to Know

While the iPhone Duo grabbed the headlines at Apple's September 9 "Surprise and Shine" event, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are the phones that most people will actually buy. And this year, they're genuinely impressive — particularly the camera upgrades, which represent the biggest leap in iPhone photography in years.

Variable Aperture Camera — The Headline Feature

For the first time on any iPhone, the 18 Pro and Pro Max feature a 48MP main camera with a variable aperture. This means the lens can physically widen or narrow to control how much light hits the sensor — something previously only possible on high-end dedicated cameras. In practice, you get richer low-light photos with a wider aperture, and greater depth of field for landscape and detail shots with a narrower one.

The full rear camera system includes a 48MP periscope telephoto and a 48MP ultrawide. Video gets pro-grade controls including manual shutter speed and smart focus tracking. A new Photographic Styles feature lets you adjust skin texture and colour balance. Apple is also introducing Apple Reference Image — a digital verification system to confirm an image was taken on an iPhone 18 Pro (not available in EU or China).

A20 Pro Chip — 2nm Performance

Both phones are powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC's 2nm process. It features a 6-core CPU with 2 new super cores and 4 efficiency cores, delivering a 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU compared to the A19 Pro. Apple says it's the "ultimate chip for running on-device AI models," and the full suite of Siri AI features — including the best version of Apple Intelligence — runs exclusively on the 18 Pro, 17 Pro, and iPhone Air.

Battery Life — A Major Upgrade

Apple claims the iPhone 18 Pro delivers the same battery life as the iPhone 17 Pro Max — 36 hours of video playback. The Pro Max steps up to an impressive 45 hours, the largest battery life increase ever on an iPhone. A redesigned vapour chamber with 3x the surface area handles thermals, giving a 40% improvement in sustained performance.

Design & Display

The Dynamic Island gets a meaningful upgrade — it can now display three live activities at once, up from two. The phones come in four colours: Silver, Black, Glacier (a subtle lilac), and Burgundy. A new iPhone Handoff feature lets you use the same phone number across two different iPhones.

Price — Up From Last Year

Both phones cost more than their predecessors. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 USD (up from $1,099), and the Pro Max starts at $1,299 USD (up from $1,199). Canadian pricing will follow regional adjustments. Both launch on September 18.

Should You Upgrade?

  • iPhone 15 Pro or older — the jump is very significant. Variable aperture, much better battery, A20 Pro, and upgraded Dynamic Island are all meaningful.
  • iPhone 16 Pro — worth considering if you use the camera heavily. The variable aperture is a genuine step forward.
  • iPhone 17 Pro — skip it. One-year upgrades rarely make financial sense.
